Director of Climate Change Prof. Halil Hasar attended the chamber of shipping council meeting. At the meeting chaired by Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Murat Kurum, participants discussed challenges facing the maritime sector and green transition in the seas.

Speaking at the meeting hosted by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Türkiye (TOBB) and attended by members of the Chamber of Shipping Council, Minister Kurum stated that, as a Ministry, they are rolling out innovative projects one by one to protect the seas within the framework of the Century of Türkiye vision.

In his address, Minister Kurum drew attention to the mucilage outbreak in the Sea of Marmara and warned municipalities along the Marmara coastline to fulfill the commitments they made under the mucilage action plan.

Stressing that the necessary measures must be taken to prevent a recurrence of the mucilage problem, Minister Kurum said, “It is essential that the wastewater treatment plants that were promised are built without delay so that mucilage and similar issues are not experienced again. As pledged, raise the standards of your treatment plants. We do not want to face the mucilage problem again. I call on all municipalities along the coast of Marmara Sea to take responsibility and to save it. We cannot allow even a single liter of polluted water to enter the Marmara Sea. If you fail to deliver on the actions you promised, we will lose our beautiful Marmara.”

The meeting was attended by Minister Murat Kurum, Deputy Minister Fatma Varank, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Durmuş Ünüvar, TOBB President Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, and the Chair and members of the Chamber of Shipping Council. The meeting continued behind closed doors.
