Prof. Halil Hasar, Director of Climate Change, represented Türkiye at a high-level session titled “Multisectoral Action Pathways (MAP) to Resilient and Healthy Cities,” held on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), the event was held under the auspices of the incoming Azerbaijani Presidency of the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate.
The session was designed to introduce the COP29 Action Agenda and the "Multisectoral Action Pathways (MAP) to Resilient and Healthy Cities" Presidential initiative. It provided a platform for participants to share critical feedback on the MAP Declaration while serving as a networking hub for key stakeholders to forge new partnerships and strengthen existing collaborations in urban climate action. During the meeting, Director Hasar highlighted the Global Goal on Adaptation Framework decision adopted at COP28 and emphasized the pivotal role of both national and local governments in driving climate action.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Halil Hasar also called for more profound discussions regarding climate finance at COP29, specifically underscoring the vital importance of securing funding for local-level climate initiatives.
The session drew high-level representatives from the COP29 Presidency, the UN-Habitat, and ICLEI, alongside senior officials from the World Meteorological Organization, municipalities, multilateral development banks, and philanthropic organizations.
Director Hasar will continue to represent Türkiye in a series of events throughout Climate Week on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly, all aimed at raising the bar for global climate ambition.
